TEDDER, Henry Richard (1850-1924) Athenaeum Club, London 1872-1922 (CL 1874, also Secretary 1889)
As a founder-member of the LA, first joint Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer from 1889 until his death - with the exception of his Presidential year, 1897, he was the most influential figure in the Association during its first half century; he was also one of the most highly respected librarians outside it. His success in serving his Club is token of his careful and exceptionally competent management; London clubs have always had among their members those with highly developed critical faculties! His meticulous care of the LA's scanty funds brought him much criticism, notably from E A Savage. Tedder's zeal for efficient professional education was clear from the outset; his support for the pioneer SCHOOL at UCL in 1919 was all of a piece with that for the first professional examinations in 1885. A man of many talents he contributed to the Ency. Brit., the DNB and Palgrave's Dictionary of political economy.
